The 2026 Reconciliation Forum and Gala took place on April 9, 2026, at Assiniboia Downs, bringing together Indigenous Nations, Elders, government representatives, industry leaders, prospectors, educators, and community partners for a full day focused on economic reconciliation and partnership in Manitoba’s critical minerals sector.
The event welcomed 206 attendees from across Manitoba and reflected a shared recognition that early-stage mineral exploration is where relationships are established and where better outcomes can begin.
The Forum ran from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., beginning with a cultural opening that included drumming and opening remarks from Elders representing multiple communities. Terry Brown, President of the Manitoba Prospectors and Developers Association (MPDA), and Renee Greyeyes, CEO, delivered welcoming remarks.
Walter Mainville, Mineral Sector Specialist with Grand Council Treaty #3, highlighted how Treaty #3 is strengthening its role in the critical mineral sector through Manito Aki Inakonigaawin, the Great Earth Law. He spoke to the importance of territory-wide awareness, planning, and community-driven initiatives that support informed decision-making at the Nation level. He also introduced Waasekiwaat Land Watch, a new platform designed to help First Nations track and receive notification of critical mineral development activity, alongside a Critical Mineral Development 101 approach aimed at supporting earlier engagement in development decisions.
A central component of the day was the presence and participation of Elders, whose guidance grounded the conversations and reinforced the importance of respectful engagement, early dialogue, and relationship-building in the sector.
Throughout the day, participants engaged in short courses, presentations, and discussions led by representatives from the Government of Manitoba as well as industry partners. Topics focused on practical areas including the process of exploration, early- stage engagement, financing of exploration activities, workforce development, economic opportunities, and strengthening Indigenous partnerships within the critical minerals sector.
Sponsors and exhibitors were present throughout the day, creating space for direct conversations, relationship-building, and collaboration across sectors.
The evening Gala began with a networking reception at 5:00 p.m., followed by a dinner program from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The program opened with a cultural presentation led by Coco Ray Stevenson, alongside dancers Les Nelson and River Nelson. Coco and Les shared teachings on the traditional drum song, as well as the meaning behind the dance and regalia, grounding the evening in culture and knowledge. Elder Cara Widrick opened the evening with a prayer.
SCO Grand Chief Jerry Daniels delivered an inspiring message that resonated strongly with the audience. Drawing on the Creation story of Turtle Island, he spoke about the otter who dove deeper than any other creature to bring forward a handful of earth. His message emphasized that even the smallest among us can take risks, show courage, and make a meaningful difference.
These opening moments recognized the importance of Indigenous knowledge, leadership, and presence in shaping the path forward.
The Gala featured keynote speaker Bill Gallagher, author of Resource Rulers: Fortune and Folly on Canada’s Road to Resources, who spoke to the shifting dynamics of resource development in Canada and the need for stronger alignment between industry, Indigenous Nations, and government. Master of Ceremonies Ethel Anderson guided the evening program.
The 2026 MPDA Indigenous Partnership in Reconciliation Award was presented to Grid Metals Corp. and Sagkeeng Anicinabe Nation, recognizing leadership in advancing Indigenous partnerships and economic participation in Manitoba’s mineral sector.
This recognition reflects the growing importance of working relationships between Indigenous Nations and industry that are built early, are ongoing, and are grounded in mutual understanding and respect.
