Consensus from mining industry is unanimous, Manitoba’s mining sector at risk

Manitoba’s mining industry is being significantly hampered by increased regulations, high fees and unrealistic timelines. It is fractured by NDP policies that are continuing to dig a regulatory hole for prospectors, developers and mining companies that operate in Manitoba.  

“The mining industry is facing significant challenges because of NDP roadblocks to development,” said opposition mineral resources critic, Cliff Cullen. 

According to a recent industry publication, Mining Association of Manitoba executive vice president Tim Friesen said “by almost any measure Manitoba’s mining industry is at risk” and “simply put, the status quo is not an option.”

The NDP does not like comparisons to Saskatchewan, but a review of expected investment between Manitoba and Saskatchewan provides a stark contrast between the two provinces.  Saskatchewan is expecting to attract $300 million dollars in exploration this year, compared to just $30 million for Manitoba.

“According to the Manitoba Prospectors and Developers Association, there are plenty of examples of exploration programs taking months and years to get off the ground because of delays” said Cullen. “The NDP approach clearly isn’t working and those employed by the mining industry are paying the price.”
